North Carolina has the most stringent driver education requirements in the country; both student and instructors are required to complete several steps for licensing. All driver-training educators must have specific training, pass a written test and road test, and also be supervised prior to recommendation for being licensed.

Instructions

Complete 80 contact hours at a community college or an instructor training program conducted by an approved commercial driver-training school, or through an equivalent course approved by the commission, within four years prior to application.

Pass the written test and Miller Road test administered by a Driver Education Specialist and obtain a 90-day probationary permit.

Undergo observation and evaluation by a Driver Education Specialist during a two-hour classroom instruction and a two-hour road instruction. Upon satisfactory completion, be recommended by the Driver Education Specialist for an instructor's license.

Complete an original commercial driving training application. This includes a personal history form, criminal background check, physical examination report signed by a license physician and evidence of satisfactory high school graduation or equivalency, and a $16 fee (as a money order).

Make copies of all application information and send the original information to the School Bus and Traffic Safety Section of the Division of Motor Vehicles and file a copy with the place of business.

Tip

Current teachers who have teaching licenses may meet the requirements for a driver-training instructor and can contract with a commercial driver-training instruction school outside of educational hours.
